Abstract
1364728 Launching tube MESSERSCHMITT - BOLKOW - BLOHM GmbH 12 Nov 1971 [13 Nov 1970] 52704/71 Heading F3C A missile 6, Fig. 1, is mounted in a ring 9 which is slidable in a tube 1. A combustion chamber 10 is formed between a portion of the tube 1, an end wall 4 and a piston 8 which is located within the tube. A propulsive charge 7, having a primer 11, is positioned in the chamber 10 and, when ignited, forces the piston 8 towards the open (front) end 3 of the tube. The missile 6 is projected therefrom and both the piston 8 and the ring 9 are arrested by a stop 5. Thus the chamber 10 remains gas-tight so that flash is obscured and sound is reduced. In other embodiments the piston is omitted and a diaphragm is attached to the open (front) end of the tube and extends therein; the diaphragm may be replaced by two pistons, one of which engages the missile and the other engages a high-density shock-absorbing filling which may be ejected; the propulsive charge may be located within bellows or the chamber may be supplied with pressurized gas from an external source, which chamber is formed between two diaphragms, one attached to the open (front) end of a tube and the other to the open (rear) end of the tube.
