Abstract
126,336. Stone, A. J. Dec. 20, 1916. Ordnance design.-Relates to the gun described in Specification 125,652, in which gun the recoil is eliminated by the rearward discharge of a mass which is light in comparison with the mass of the effective projectile, and which frictionally engages the tapered rear end of the barrel. According to the present invention, the rear end of the barrel has two stages of tapering, one of which acts on the light mass before, and one after the effective projectile has left the gun. The light mass is therefore arrested instead of passing out of the gun as described in the above-mentioned Specification, and the rear end of the barrel may be opened to enable the arrested mass to be removed. In the form shown, the projectile 4, the propelling charge 3, and a 'light mass 2 in the form of a soft-metal cup, are loaded into the forward part of the barrel. The rear part 1 of the barrel is tapered or reduced below the diameter of the cup 2 to offer frictional resistance to the passage of the cup. The cup is arrested in a further closed tapered portion 6 wherein air is compressed, the resistance being varied by an adjustable vent 9<a>. When the projectile 4 has just left the barrel, the cup uncovers adjustable ports 5 to relieve the pressure. To compensate for the arrest of the cup, a forward movement is conveyed to the barrel by the action of the gun gases which pass through adjustable ports 8 and act upon a flange 7.
