Abstract

9908. Brown, J. H. April 24. Ordnance, preventing ing erosion in. - Consists in tapering the gun bore in front of the powder chamber which, in conjunction with a l u b r i c a t i n g band on the projectile, prevents the passage of the hot gases past the projectile. In the form shown, the part h of the bore between the powder-chamber m and the rifling e is smooth and tapers in such a manner that, when the pressure of the explosion gases attains its maximum, the walls of the tapered portion be co m e substantially parallel to the axis of the bore. In one example the length of the part h is 10 inches, and the diameters at its front and rear ends are 2À244 inches and 2À394 inches respectively. The compressible lubricating-band f on the projectile is deformed by passage through the part h, thereby extruding lubricant through the holes k upon the gun bore. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 10,915/10.
