Abstract

Ordnance, design; chambers; riftings.-A bomb has a tubular tail fitting over a barrel a and a central tube d fitting into the barrel and containing an auxiliary propelling charge which comes into action after the explosion of the projecting charge in the barrel. The barrel is rifled externally, and the tail of the bomb is provided with fingers or balls h, Fig. 5, engaging the rifling grooves. Inclined holes are formed in the central tube to direct gases against the internal rifling in the barrel to assist in spinning the projectile. As shown in Fig. 1, the breech is closed by a screwed block b adapted to be rotated automatically as the barrel is elevated, the block being thereby shifted axially to alter the size of the explosion chamber. The projecting charge is fired by a rifle lock l. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the barrel is formed with a number of longitudinal passages a' surrounding the bore, through which gases from the explosion chamber pass and impinge at an angle against ribs k formed on the front wall of the annular recess in the projectile. The gases exhaust to the atmosphere through holes j in the tubular tail.
