Abstract

1,152,625. Projectiles. BREVETS AEROMECANIQUES S.A. 28 June, 1967 [21 July, 1966], No. 29788/67. Heading F3A. An armour piercing projectile for firing from rifled gun barrels comprises a hard, dense, metallic core 1, e.g. of tungsten carbide, housed within a detachable, tubular case 2 of lighter material e.g. aluminium alloy or plastics, the core being locked in the case at the front end by a split ring 6 which protrudes from an annular groove 7 to abut a shoulder 5 on the core. When the projectile is fired, the case 2 and core 1 are set spinning and the ring 6 expands wholly into groove 7. Due to resistance in moving through the atmosphere the case 2 then quickly drops away from the core 1. A hole 12 in the base of the case prevents the occurrence of suction which would oppose the separation and also enables a tracer compound 13 to be ignited by the hot gases in the gun barrel: An empty annular space (not shown), may be provided inside the case so that it contacts the core over two separate areas of its length. The case may also be fitted on the outside with a thin steel ring (not shown) to prevent too deep a penetration of the barrel riflings into the case.
