Abstract
1,157,555. Disintegrating practice projectiles. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. 1 June, 1967 [29 Sept., 1966], No. 25245/67. Heading F3A. A projectile for target practice ammunition which corresponds in size, shape and weight to the projectile of a corresponding live round but which disintegrates on discharge from the muzzle of a weapon leaving a subsidiary subcalibre projectile to continue its flight, comprises a thin walled case 1 having lines of weakness 4 and a filling 10, 11, of moulded or pressed heavy material held in place by a base member 5, and being provided at its forward end with a short range subsidiary sub-calibre projectile 14, the seating for which keeps the subsidiary projectile centred until it has left the muzzle of the weapon. The base 5 has a hollow shank 6 provided with longitudinal lines of weakness and is fixed in the case 1 by threads 6a or transverse corrugations. The seating for the subsidiary projectile may be provided by several segments 13 having pincerlike jaws 13a which project out of the case 1 and are kept closed by resilient arms 13b bearing against the inside wall of the case and abutting a strengthening element 8. The case 1 and segments 13 are made of light alloy. When the weapon is fired the full calibre section 2 of the case is expanded under the effect of the inertia forces developed by the filling and is pressed firmly against the barrel wall to provide a gas check. On the projectile leaving the muzzle the same forces split the shank 6 and case 1 along the lines of weakness.
