Abstract
576,217. Projectiles. PERMUTTER, L. March 8, 1943, No. 6401/42. [Class 9 (i)] A sub-calibre projectile fitted with a casing adapted to hold the projectile firmly in every direction so as to transmit both thrust and rotation, has the casing formed in two longitudinally relatively-movable parts, the forward part being in separable sections contacting with the shoulder of the projectile so that they are opened outwardly on the initial set-back and are released from the projectile after passing out of the gun muzzle. In one form, Fig. 1, the rear part 40 of the casing supports the base of the projectile 39 and is provided with a forward socket 44 which receives a spigot on the united forward sections 41 which are incompletely separated by saw-cuts 45 and provided with weakened portions 48, and have shaped front portions 49 contacting with the curved nose of the projectile. On initial setback at firing, the forward sections are ruptured at 48 and the sections are free to fly off as soon as the projectile leaves the muzzle. In a modification, Fig. 3, the forward portion 57 of the casing is formed in sections retained in engaging position before firing by interengaging projections 59, 61 on the sections and the casing respectively ; on initial set-back, the projection on the sections and casing enter corresponding recesses 56, 60 in the casing and sections, respectively, so that the sections are free to fly off as soon as the projectile is free from the barrel. The projectile has a frusto-conical base part 54.
