Abstract
353,425. Projectiles. HADFIELD, SIR R. A., 22, Carlton House Terrace, London, and CLERKE, A. B. H., Hecla Works, Sheffield. Jan. 22, 1930, Nos. 2243 and 14584. [Class 9 (i).] The base plug or fuze adapter d of an armourpiercing projectile a is screwed into the projectile in advance of the rear face c of the projectile so as to leave a short rear end part a<2> of the wall of the projectile unsupported from within; by this means, should the rear end a<2> of the projectile be subjected to great lateral pressure in passing through an armour plate, it may bend or break without affecting the fuze adapter. The rear end a2 may be made thinner, or may be weakened by a groove a<5>, Fig. 4. The adapter may have a flange d<1>, Fig. 1, at its rear end, or a shoulder n, Fig. 3, at its front end to form a tight joint with the projectile. A ring h, Fig. 3, of brittle material may be screwed into the rear end of the projectile and against a shoulder on the adapter to support the rear end when this is subjected to the propellent pressure in the gun, while not interfering with its freedom of inward movement on impact. To avoid appreciable reduction of the internal explosive charge, the adapter d is made with a recess d<5> in its front end, and may be extended rearwards as shown in Fig. 3. The rear face of the adapter is formed with an annular recess d<3> and a larger screw-threaded recess d<4> to receive the usual coverplate.
