Abstract
679,347. Projectiles. SCHLUMBERGER OVERSEAS SOC. ANON. April 16, 1951. No. 8836/51. Class 9 (i). Projectile for a gun-perforator for use in well casings comprises a casing-piercing member 10 having a pointed nose 12 and a sub-calibre cylindrical portion 11 surrounded by a sleeve 13 of the same diameter as the bore of the gun. The sleeve has a shoulder 14 bearing against the base of the projectile and is made of hard, brittle metal, such that it flattens out burrs made in the casing by the projectile and is disintegrated by the impact. The metal may be cast iron or brittle steels. Weakening grooves 15 may be formed in the sleeve. Mounted on the member 10 in front of the sleeve is a stopper member 16 of flexible material, e.g. rubber. The stopper member has a flange 17 which is forced by the pressure of the well fluid into engagement with the wall of the gun bore 18. Behind the projectile is a powder charge 21 ignited by known means to fire the projectile. In a modification, the stopper member is not flanged but is surrounded at the rear by a soft metal ring 22, e.g. annealed copper, having an inwardly extending flange 23. The purpose of the ring is to prevent the stopper member flowing around the burr elimination member 13 due to hydrostatic pressure.
