[Class 122 (iii)] [See also Groups XXXI and XII] The exhaust steam from locomotives and other steam plant is divided into two parts, one part being condensed and the other part being diluted with air which has taken up heat from the condensed steam, the resulting invisible mixture being discharged into the open air. The furnace gases may be added to the mixture. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 and 3, the exhaust pipe 1 from the cylinders 2 leads to an exhaust turbine 3 driving a furnace suction blower 4. The exhaust steam pipe 5 from the turbine 3 has two branches 7, 8 of which 7 leads to an aircooled condenser 9 and 8 leads to pipes 12 having nozzles 13. The air passing through the condenser 9 is heated thereby and mixes with steam from the nozzles 13, the mixture excaping to the open air through a passage 14. The passage of air through the condenser may be assisted by a fan driven by another exhaust turbine. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the furnace blower 4 discharges into the passage 14. In another modification, Fig. 5, the main exhaust pipe 1 leads into a chamber 17 from which part of the exhaust steam passes to the condenser 9 through the pipe 7. The remainder of the exhaust steam is discharged through nozzles from the chamber 17 and passes in succession through nozzles 18 in the smoke-box and nozzles 19 in the chamber 14, finally being discharged at the chimney 20 after mixing with and causing suction on the furnace gases and the condenser air.
