Abstract
444,460. Precombustion chambers. DAIMLER - BENZ AKT. - GES., Unterturkheim, Stuttgart, Germany. Aug. 30, 1935, No. 24250. Convention date, Aug. 30, 1934. [Class 7 (iii)] In an oil engine the whole or a substantial part of a precombustion chamber is formed as a displaceable insertion piece so that the cross-section of the passage through which the contents of the chamber enter the engine .cylinder can be changed. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the precombustion chamber g is formed in a spherical member d which is disposed in insertions b<1>, b2 in the cylinder head and controlled by a lever e. The member has diametrically opposed openings h<1>, h<2> and h3, h4 which can be rotated to face the outlet of the fuel injector c and a passage leading to the cylinder. During normal running the opening h<1> is adjacent the injector and the opening h<2>, which preferably consists of several bores arranged in a circle, is adjacent the cylinder, whilst during starting, the member d is turned through a right-angle to bring the larger opening h<4> adjacent the cylinder and permit fuel to be injected directly into the cylinder. A small ante-chamber k is formed between the member d and a ring-shaped projection l on the insertion b<2>, and the projection screens the member d from the hot gases in the cylinder. In Fig. 4, only the lower constricted part g<2> of the precombustion chamber is formed in the insertion piece d<1>. In modified constructions, (1) the displaceable insertion piece is formed by a slide valve provided with separate transfer passages ; (2) the displacement is performed automatically by a starting device or is related to the speed, load, or temperature of the engine ; and (3) the passage between the precombustion chamber and the cylinder is formed by a slot in the displaceable insertion arranged so as to provide a wide passage in the starting position, a narrow passage in the normal running position, and a passage of intermediate size in other positions.
