440,029. Variable-speed gearing. WICKMAN, A. C., Queen Victoria Road, Coventry. June 14, 1934, No. 17605. [Class 80 (ii)] Automatically variable gearing suitable for vehicles of the kind comprising transmission elements 17 producing rotary impulses in opposite directions alternately is provided with a one-way clutch 27 between the driving and driven shafts responsive to overrunning of the latter so that the engine can be used as a brake. Rotation of the driving-shaft 10 causes centrifugal masses 17 to be carried round over eccentrics 15 rigid with an intermediate shaft 13 so as to impart alternating rotary impulses thereto. In the form shown, there is an abutment sleeve 20 and detent rollers 24 which render backward impulses of the shaft 13 ineffective, and one-way clutch rollers 25 inside a driven drum 23 which cause the forward impulses to drive the drum continuously. The drum 23 is rigid with a driven shaft 12. The one-way clutch 27 is supported on an extension 14 of the driving-shaft 10 and coacts with a barrel 28 with a dog-clutch end 30 adapted to engage the clutch end 31 of a connector 38 which is permanently connected to the drum 23 through a yielding plate clutch 36. When the shaft 12 starts to overrun, torque is transmitted from the drum 23 to the barrel 28 whereupon the clutch 27 picks up and transmits torque to the engine which has a braking action. The plate clutch 36 yields on overload. The oneway clutch 27 can be disabled by disengaging the dogs 30, 31 by turning a pin 39 with a crank end 40. The detent 24 and one-way drive clutch 25 are, in the arrangement shown, reversible to reverse the direction of rotation of the driven shaft. The invention applies to arrangements in which the backwardimpulses are converted into forward ones.
