[Class 135] Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.-In a valve of the type in which fluid pressure maintains the valve a<1> in one position, i.e. either opened or closed, and the valve is moved to the other position by opening an electromagneticallyoperated pilot valve so as to cause fluid pressure to be admitted to a chamber a<6> beneath a piston a4 fixed to the valve stem a<2>, the chamber a<6> is in communication with the outlet side of the valve a<1> by a narrow passage a<3> in the stem a<2> and a small opening a' from the passage as to the outlet side, so that the fluid can only escape gradually from the chamber a<6> and thus the valve a<1> moves slowly back to its initial position when the pilot valve is closed. In one form, the passage a<3> extends through the whole length of the stem a<2> and is closed on the inlet side by a pilot valve b<2>. Energization of an electromagnet B causes the valve b<2> to be raised so that pressure fluid flows through the passage a<3> to the chamber a<6> thus causing the main valve a<1> to be raised. The valve b<2> may be raised by spring action and closed by the energizing of the magnet B. In a modification, the passage a<3> does not extend to the inlet side of the valve a<1> but a pipe connects the inlet side to the chamber a<6> and flow therein is controlled by an electromagnetically-operated pilot valve.
