Abstract

776,266. Valves; regulating volume of flow of fluids. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 27, 1953 [May 29, 1952], No. 14767/53. Class 135. A diaphragm valve 16 which has little or no inherent bias is separately biased to the closed position by a spring 31, and it is opened by a pressure differential produced across the diaphragm by an electro-magnetically operable pilot valve 25. When the valve is closed, inlet fluid can flow past a strainer 6 and through a port 29 in the diaphragm to build up pressure on the upper side of the diaphragm to keep the main valve closed. When the solenoid 30 is energized, its armature 25 is raised to uncover an axial port 27 in the diaphragm, and as the fluid pressure above the diaphragm can now flow to the outlet 7, the inlet pressure acting on the underface of the diaphragm valve will lift it to the open position. An apertured disc 12 in the outlet ensures a uniform flow irrespective of variations in pressure.
