Abstract

924,525. Valves. G. G. TURNER. (Futurecraft Corporation). Jan. 23, 1961, No. 2570/61. Class 135. A high-pressure fluid-control valve comprises a body 10 having an inlet 13, an outlet 14 communicating via a port 40, a closure member controlling flow through the port and having a resilient ring 53 located between relatively movable flanges 56, 57 arranged to compress the ring in order to provide a radially projecting edge portion 54 thereof, and a relatively movable shoulder 39 arranged to cooperate with the ring to close the port, the portion 54 being adapted to make initial contact with the shoulder and then be moved into further sealing engagement therewith by fluid pressure. The ring 53, which may be an O- ring of natural or synthetic rubber, is clamped against the flange 57 formed on a valve spindle 12 by the flange 56 provided on a sleeve 21, the sleeve being moved axially to compress the 0-ring by means of a nut 27, Fig. 1. A second 0-ring 42 is arranged in the valve body and is clamped by a flange 46 formed on a screw sleeve 17 against a second flange 45 formed in the valve body. The co-operating shoulder 50 is formed on the valve spindle 12. As shown in Fig. 1, the spindle 12 is connected to the armature 33 of a solenoid 32 and, in the deenergized position shown, is urged by a spring 55 to a position in which the 0-ring 53 contacts the flange shoulder 39, thereby closing the port 40; the degree of contact is limited by a stop 24 on the spindle. In this position, the shoulder 50 is in the open position relative to the 0-ring 42. When the solenoid is energized, these positions are reversed. In a modification, the upper 0-ring 53 may be replaced by the shoulder 50 and the latter shoulder by the 0-ring 53. In the construction shown in Fig. 6 (not shown), the closure means is arranged in a pilot-operated main valve, the spindle 12a of the pilot valve which is solenoid operated, and the spindle 12c of the main valve, actuated by a differential piston 10, are both provided with 0-rings as previously described.
