Abstract

430,281. Variable speed gearing. LUTZ, A. C., 4735, S. Winchester Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A. July 20, 1934, No. 21305. [Class 80 (ii)] In an automatic epicyclic gear of the kind in which centrifugal masses 25 act in one direction only, to take up backlash in the train and thereby produce a variable internal friction, the masses are directly attached to certain of the gears. The masses 25, which are curved about the axis of the aligned driving and driven shafts 10, 15, are secured to pinions 23, freely mounted on a planet-spindle 12 secured to a driving arm 11 Pinions 16, fixed to the arm 11 are drivingly connected with the pinions 23 through pinions 32, 33 secured to a shaft 30, freely journalled in a planet-wheel 22 which meshes with a driven wheel 20. The masses 25 tend to produce relative rotation between the connected pinions 23, 16, the resulting internal friction in the train 16, 32, 33, 23 restraining the planetwheel 22, and finally yielding solid drive. In Figs. 3 and 4, not shown, the arm 11 is free on the driven shaft 15, the planet-spindle 12 carrying pinions meshing with a driving sun-wheel. In Fig. 6, the driving shaft 70 freely carries two arms 72, 73, and has keyed to it two sun-wheels 78, 85. Centrifugal masses 76 secured to pinions 77, produce internal friction in the train 81, 82, 84, 85, thereby restraining the final planet-pinion 90, which drives a sun-wheel 87 keyed to a driven shaft 71.
