Abstract

530,514. Variable-speed gearing. SHEPPARD. T. V. June 12, 1939, No. 14810. [Class 80 (ii)] A shaft A drives a shaft C through a differential gear B, the housing of which is connected by gears D, E to a centrifugal hydraulic resistance unit consisting of vanes F rotating in a vessel G. The vanes may be of variable pitch and controlled by external means and the vessel may be specially shaped or may contain vanes to offer resistance to circular motion. The vessel may be geared to the housing to rotate over the internal member. The positions of the driving and driven shafts and resistance unit may be interchanged. The resistance unit may be cooled by a current of air supplied by a fan or produced by the movement of a vehicle. The differential unit may be mounted in a casing in which it is free to rotate. The device may be used in conjunction with multiplying or variable-speed gearing. Specification 287,595, [Class 80 (ii)], is referred to.
