[Classes 75 (ii) and 76 (iv] A street or other lamp comprises a support 1 for an elongated light source 3, such as a hot cathode electric discharge tube, and concavereflectors 4, 5 arranged one above another opposite different longitudinal sections of the light source with their focal points on the axis of the source, so as to direct light in superposed downwardly inclined beams. The lower part of the light source is freely exposed for local illumination. A pair of reflectors may be arranged to send light in one direction only, or two such pairs may be arranged as shown in Fig. 3. Pairs of reflectors may be arranged to send light along all roads at cross-roads, or, as shown in Fig. 8, the main roads at cross-roads may be illuminated by pairs of reflectors 4, 5, and single reflectors 8, 8<a> may illuminate the secondary roads. The reflectors may be quarters of paraboloids, formed by dividing the paraboloid along its axis and at right-angles thereto. Alternatively, the reflector may be more or less than a quarter paraboloid. The reflectors may be of polished metal or silvered glass, or composed of facets of silvered glass cemented to a cast metal backing, as described in Specification 228,294. The metal backings of the upper and lower reflectors are each cast in one piece. The reflectors 5 are attached to the reflectors 4 by bolts 6 with distance tubes 7. Weathering hoods or canopies, and lanterns or globes of slightly diffusing glass, may be provided.
