Abstract
484,428. Street lamps. HOLOPHANE. Ltd., and ENGLISH, S. Feb. 16, 1937, No. 4657. [Class 75 (ii)] A lamp for streetlighting purposes comprises a prismatic refractor 1 enclosing a light source 4 which subtends a small angle at the prisms in the plane of refraction, the faces of the refracting prisms 6 being curved, as shown in Fig. 2 to produce diffusion in the plane of refraction on either side of the general direction of projection. The arrows e<1>, f<1>, g<1> and h<1>, k<1>, l<1>, Fig. 2, indicate the diffusion produced after refraction by two prisms of typical rays e, f, g and h, k, l. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the light source 5 is a central vertically arranged gaseous discharge tube, the prisms 6 being formed with curved faces only within an arc B on each side of the source 5. This construction ensures projection of light in the general direction C with diffusion over an angle of about 10‹ on each side of this direction. Specifications 351,761 and 359,692 are referred to.
