Abstract

380,867. Prismatic lighting units. HOLOPHANE, Ltd. and ENGLISH, S., Holophane House, Elverton Street, Vincent Square, London. July 2, 1931, No. 19111. [Class 75 (ii).] A closed lighting unit having a smooth outer surface comprises a reflector portion 1, Fig. 2, and a light diffusing or spreading portion 8, Fig. 4, the reflector portion being formed or provided with a series of internal prisms whose faces 5 are arranged at or approximately at right-angles to the ray of incident light and receive light directly from the light source 4. The outer or reflecting surface of each prism is so disposed that the light strikes it at an angle greater than the critical angle, an angle of 45‹ being preferred, and the outer surfaces 7 of a series of concentric prisms are arranged to form a smooth curve. The light diffusing and spreading portion is provided on its interior surface with a series of circumferential prisms or flutes 11 adapted to give a spread of light in a vertical plane and with a series of radiating intersecting flutes 12 to give light diffusion in lateral planes.
