Abstract

454,351. Street &c. overhead lamps. WINKLER, G. W., 58, Garenkokerskade, Haarlem, Holland. Feb. 10, 1936, Nos. 3997 and 3998. Convention dates, Feb. 11, 1935 and Oct. 21, 1935. [Class 75 (iv)] In a street or like overhead lamp comprising one or more linear or substantially point sources of light and one or more troughshaped, circular, or polygonal reflectors, the reflecting surfaces are completely hidden from view at undesirable angles by shading means having a light absorbing surface. The shading means may be in the form of hoods or rims along the edges of the reflectors, and/or in the form of radial diaphragms or partitions. The latter are preferably arranged so that rays reflected directly by the reflectors are projected along the edges of the partitions or parallel to the surfaces of the partitions. The shading means may be arranged only on the side or sides of the reflectors, and preferably so that no portion of the reflectors is visible when viewed at an angle of elevation of about 15‹. The shading may be obtained by coating with dull black enamel or by pasting on black velvet, velour, or like material. Alternatively, coloured shading may be employed with coloured light sources. Fig. 1 shows alternative hoods 10, 1, 2, 3, 4, of different shapes, each of which extends at least as low as the line 9 so as to screen the portion 7 of the reflector 6. Fig. 3 shows how a large hood AB may be replaced by a small hood AC and a partition DE. Fig. 5 shows a cross-section of an elongated reflector fitted only with a partition G having at its upper end an additional reflecting shade a facing the light source. In the form shown in Fig. 14 the reflector comprises a circular part v<1>, v<2> between parabolic parts u<1>, v<1>, u<2>, v<2> which reflect rays parallel to light absorbing partitions T<1>, T<2>, the upper ends of which are fitted with additional reflecting shades c<1>, c<2>. Shading hoods u<1>, z<1>, u<2>, z<2> may also be provided, the portions u<1>, yl, u<2>, y<2> thereof being made light absorbing or associated with additional reflecting shades b<1>, b<2>.
