Abstract
423,241. Partly magnetic thermal switches. PIPER, T. W., Hillbury, Redbourn, St. Albans, Hertfordshire. July 22, 1933, No. 20674. [Class 38 (v)] A thermal switch having magnetic means for providing a quick - action, comprises a bimetallic strip 4 carrying at its free end an armature 3 adapted, in the on and off positions of the switch, to engage adjustable stops 7 on polepieces 2 of a permanent magnet 1. A rod 8 passing loosely through a hole in the armature 3 is fitted with stops 9 and is connected to a pivoted arm 5 carrying a contact bridge 11 having wiping engagement with fixed contacts 6. When the bimetallic strip 4 heats up it bends until it overcomes the force of attraction of the armature 3 which moves rapidly upwards and strikes the upper stop 9. The kinetic energy of the armature is sufficient to overcome the contact friction and to ensure a quick-action, the armature then resting on the upper stops 7 on the polepieces.
