Abstract
672,778. Magnetic switches. WATFORD ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. Oct. 26, 1949. [Dec. 1, 1948] No. 31161/48. Class 38 (v). [Also in Group XXXV] An eddy-current switch for reverse-plugging an electric motor is provided with means to prevent the contacts opening until the motor has practically stopped. A copper cup 11 on a shaft 12, driven by the motor, rotates between an iron ring 14 and a magnet 15 pivoted on a shaft 16, whereby the magnet also tends to rotate and a pin 18 thereon moves one of two levers 19 so that its switch arm 21 engages a corresponding contact 22. The levers 19 are displaceably mounted on a rod 28 on an insulating plate 23 and centralised by springs 20 and when a lever is deflected by the pin 18 it is retained by a spring-loaded latch 24 pivoted at .25 and having a step 26 engaging a slot in the lever extremity. The lever 19 thus cannot return to open the contacts 21, 22 until released by the pin 18 engaging the free end of the latch, which action does not occur until the pin has returned to its central position corresponding to a stationary condition of the motor. In an alternative construction, the magnet 15 is driven by the motor and the copper cup 11 operates the levers 19. To increase the force operating the levers by eliminating an air gap, the ring 14 may be mounted on the cup, Fig. 3 (not shown). The latter arrangement forms the subject of Specification 672,859, [Group XXXV].
