Abstract
565,996. Thermal switches ; interrupters. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., ROSEBY, P. N., and McNIATH, H. J. June 3, 1943, No. 8901. [Class 38 (v)] The movable contact member 32 of an A.C. switch is held in the closed position by an electromagnet 33 included in the switch circuit so that when a force acting downwards at 40 against the action of the magnet and of a spring 35 tends to move the member 32 from engagement with its contact 38, the actual break will occur when the A.C. current is passing through the zero point of its cycle and a sparkless break will occur. The force at 40 may be produced by a bimetal strip 31 having a heating coil in series with the switch contacts and the magnet and the device then acts as an interrupter which may be used for controlling a hot plate, the ratio of make to break being adjustable. In a modification, Figs. 1-2 (not shown), the moving contact strip 32 is also influenced by two bowed springs having a dead-centre action and in another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a rotary cam acts on the strip 32 through an intermediate adjustable wedge.
