Abstract
574,434. Electromagnetic switches. STILWELL, W. E. Dec. 9, 1943, No. 20592. Convention date, Dec. 5, 1942. [Class 38 (v)] An electromagnetic switch has main contacts 110, 111, 112 and sparking contacts 115, 116, 117, is operated on and off by respective energization of coils 106, 107 and is moved " off " automatically on overload by a bimetal strip 118 which is heated by the contact 110 and moves to engage a contact 121 and so close the circuit to the coil 107. The armature 108 and its spindle are controlled by a dead centre spring 114 the bimetal strip 118 is of the snap kind. In the form shown, the movable sparking contact consists of a disc 117 which bends engaging the contacts 115, 116 and so leaves them after the separation of the main contacts &c. In modifications the movable sparking contact is carried by a lever connected to the armature with lost motion and controlled it may be, by a second dead centre spring. The bimetal strip may also be without snap-action and may co-operate with another strip responsive to ambient temperature. Specification 570,293 is referred to.
