Abstract
615,187. Automatic circuit-breakers. SABATINI, U., and CIAMPOLINI, V. Aug. 2, 1946, No. 23079. Convention date, Jan. 18. [Class 38 (v)] A push button circuit breaker with manual, thermal and electromagnetic tripping, has a moving element B carrying moving contacts 2 and a coil S connected and fixed between the contacts. A second moving element A has a T-shaped slot in which three balls may move. When the circuit breaker is closed, Fig. 4, the two elements are locked together by these balls and if a heavy overload occurs the coil S attracts an armature 6 which pulls down a striker 7 to displace the centre ball so allowing the outer balls to move in to release the contact carrying element B under the pressure of springs 9, to open the contacts 2, 3, Fig. 2. A bimetallic strip, Figs. 5, 5<1> (not shown), supported on the armature 6 can move the striker to open the circuit breaker, when heated by the coil S under sustained overload conditions. .The switch is tripped manually by depressing the button D which also moves the striker 7. To reset the circuit breaker, the button is depressed fully which moves element A down and compresses the springs 1, 9 and 11. The downward movement of the striker 7 ceases when it again touches the central ball now supported on a spring 12 and the spring loaded - pads 8 carried by the push button grip the striker as it slides between them. On releasing the push button the balls, which are now in line, relock the two elements A, B so that the springs 1 force the locked assembly up to reclose the contacts 2, 3. The striker is carried up by the push button and released from it near the end of its travel by the armature, so as to be ready for any further tripping. A multipole circuit breaker is formed by coupling together a number of the switches shown in Fig. 4, so that the limbs 10 of H- section members in effect, couple together adjacent armatures 6 and elements' B. Figs. 5, 51, 6, 61, 7 and 71 (not shown) illustrate various methods of mounting the bimetallic strips or discs on the armature, and Figs. 8, 81, 9, 10, 11, 111, 12 and 12<1> (not shown) illustrate alternative methods of mounting spring members which take the place of the pads 8.
