Abstract

689,513. Automatic circuit-breakers. HEIDENWOLF, H., and NAIMER, H. Nov. 28, 1950 [Nov. 28, 1949], No. 29142/50. Class 38 (v) Excessive current in a coil 19 heats and so varies the permeability of a magnetic member 11 that a permanent magnet 16, the poles 17 of which have been engaging the member 11, is released and under the bias of a spring 14 moves into the position shown. A circuit between contacts 5, 6 and which includes the coil 19 and two spring contacts 8 normally bridged by the magnet is thereby broken. An exceptionally high current either D.C. or A.C. through the coil 19 will also release the magnet instantaneously by acting in opposition to the magnet and release may also be assisted by making the contact arms 8 of bimetal so that when heated they press upwards against the magnet with increasing strength. The device is reset by pressing down a button 26 which carries with it two arms 28 bearing on a collar 15 on the rod 13 carrying the magnet. This brings the magnet sufficiently near to the member 11 for the movement to be completed by magnetic attraction, unless the overload persists. The button 26 cannot by itself push the magnet into engagement since after a certain movement the arms 28 encounter a bar 31 and are forced apart. In a modification, Fig. 5, the permanent magnet 40 is fixed but two movable magnetic arms 41, 42, engage the ends of the heated member 43 and the contacts 44. Specification 229,564,[Class 38(v)], is referred to.
