Abstract

419,453. Self - closing valves. BRADLEY, J. W., 20, Waverley Avenue, Warmsworth Road, Doncaster. May 9, 1933, No. 13399. [Class 135.] In a self-closing valve or tap a dash-pot is provided to slow down the closing movement and the valve consists of a ball which allows a full way outlet and is capable of presenting a new face to the seat when closed. The tap body A has a seat H for a ball valve F which rests on an adjustable auxiliary valve G mounted in a piston D. A dash-pot cylinder C is adjustably attached at K to the body A and has ports L for the normal flow of water past the seat H to the outlet M. Connecting rods 0 pass through glands in the body A and connect the piston D to a member U having a square shank fitting in a socket S which has a quick-pitch screw-thread engaging the end of the rotatable operating handle R. Rotation of the handle R depresses the socket S and the piston D to open the tap, closing being effected by a spring V which rotates the handle when released and by a spring N which raises the piston D and ball F. A ball bearing W allows the handle to rotate freely in a cover P attached to the body A. Ports J, J<1> in the auxiliary valve G coact with a boss X in the cylinder C so as to be partially closed and opened respectively when the main valve is opened, in order to vary the admission of water to the cylinder. The tap is enclosed by stainless metal covers B, B<1>, as described in Specifications 374,568 and 403,383.
