Abstract
417,227. Adjusting cylinder clearance. RUUD, O. S., 40, Jacob Aallsgate, Oslo, Norway. Feb. 21, 1934, No. 5687. [Class 7 (ii).] In a multicylinder engine, the cylinder heads are formed as sliding pistons 4 mounted on a common rigid beam 6 and loaded by liquid under pressure in a chamber 11 having a vent valve 21 controlled according to the movement of the pistons 4 so that the pressure is varied in accordance with the load. The liquid, e.g. oil, is supplied by a pump through a pipe 19 and the pressure of the spring 26 loading the valve 21 is increased, as the pistons lift, by a pair of pivoted levers 7, jointed together, and to the ends of the beam 6, by eccentrics ; as shown, the pressure of a counteracting spring 31 is reduced by this movement ; alternatively, the upper abutment of the spring 26 may be drawn downwards.
