Abstract
412,465. Metallic-vapour rectifiers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., 28, Kingsway, London. Oct. 16, 1933, No. 28559. Convention date, Oct. 14, 1932. [Class 39 (i).] A grid associated with an anode of a metal-vapour rectifier comprises an annular cylindrical main part of a good heat-conducting metal, and a protective part of a material, such as iron, chromium, or molybdenum, having a higher melting point than the main part. The protective part may extend so as to form a sheathing completely covering the surface of the ring. In the example shown the grid 3 is provided with a cap 7 of molybdenum or other difficultly-fusible metal. The cap may also be a coating, applied to the grid at the end nearest the anode, for example, by spraying or plating. In a modification, an iron ring is welded to the grid at the end nearest the anode, and may also act as a support for the grid. The iron may be replaced by insulating material. In a further modification the grid may be of copper, coated entirely with a sheath of iron, chromium-iron or chromium. Grids having one or more concentric or eccentric rings may be used. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the provision of grids, having in known manner an internal cavity for cooling purposes, with fine openings through which neutral mercury vapour may be admitted into the cavity. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
