Abstract

In a method of making articles containing graphitic carbon a ferrous alloy or steel ingot containing carbon and a carbon precipitant is hot worked while the carbon is mostly if not entirely in combined form and after working is heated to a temperature above the critical point to graphitize a substantial amount of the carbon. The steel may contain about 1.5-2 per cent or more of carbon and 0.6-0.9 per cent of silicon which may be partly replaced by other elements such as nickel.
