404,034. Inductances. BARON, H., 231, Strand, London.-(Fitzgerald, A. S. ; 433, Warwick Road, Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) July 1, 1932, Nos. 18782/33, (divided on 407,014, [Group XXXV], and 34292/32. [Class 37.] Relates to a magnetic amplifier comprising a number of units 10-40 in cascade, each unit comprising an iron core with a D.C. control winding and a winding supplied with A.C., controlled by the D.C. winding, and connected by a rectifier to the D.C. winding of the succeeding unit. Each core has a divided central leg with an A.C. winding 13-43 on each portion and a D.C. control winding 15-45 wound on the centre leg as a whole, which leg also carries opposed D.C. windings 15-45 for neutralizing the effect of the normal D.C. flowing in the control windings. The A.C. flow depends on the amount of saturation of the divided central leg portions. For maximum amplification, the A.C. magnetic circuit should be of relatively small dimensions, i.e. easily saturated, and the D.C. circuit and winding relatively large, which on the other hand, for large outputs the A.C. magnetic circuit should be of ample proportions. The units may be of similar design at each stage, e.g. similar to unit 10, but of increasing overall size, or, as shown, the overall size is the same for all units but the A.C. portion is of increasing size, the latter arrangement sacrificing some amplification in the later stages. The cores, particularly of early stages, may be of high permeability alloy such as described in Specification 188,688, [Class 37, Electricity, Measuring &c.], silicon steel being used for later stages if desired.
