Abstract
1,027,685. Transformers and inductors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 26, 1963 [April 2, 1962], No. 12589/62. Heading H1T. An inductive device has a winding mounted on a closed figure core, which is subdivided to define two parallel flux branches, having non- variable air gaps, which differ between the branches to cause different reluctance characteristics. In this way, undesirable changes in the effective inductance values, especially when the winding is supplied by D.C. whose magnitude may vary, may be reduced. In one arrangement (Fig. 1, not shown), the winding 1 is mounted on the divided centre limb 3 of a shell cone, insulation 2 being provided. C- shaped outer limbs 4, 5 complete two parallel flux paths, the former having small gaps 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, the latter larger gaps 7, 7<SP>1</SP>. In a second arrangement, two elongated annular cores 8, 8<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 2, not shown) are arranged side by side, the core 8 having smaller gaps 10 than those (10<SP>1</SP>) in core 8<SP>1</SP>. A winding 9 surrounds one of the straight portions of the cores. Curves of inductance valves against direct current are given (Fig. 4, not shown) to indicate the advantages of the invention, which may be applied to smoothing chokes for direct current power packs.
