Abstract
400,318. Cylinders. LOW, A. M., 1, Woodstock Road, Stroud Green, London. May 20, 1932, No. 14319. [Class 7 (ii).] In a two-stroke engine, inlet valves are omitted and combustible mixture is forced into the combustion chamber through narrow passages 23, cooled by a water-jacket 19, at such a speed that flame cannot travel to the outer end of the passages and into the manifold 26. The passages may be tortuous and formed by baffles extending from opposite sides of a wide duct ; they may be adjustable in cross-section. The engine may comprise a very large number of small cylinders, e.g. twenty-four, and the big ends may take the form of eccentrics on the main shaft. The sparking plug 20 may be omitted, the engine being run at such a high speed that a continuous flow through the passages 23 takes place and " flame at or in the neighbourhood of the inner end of the passages serving to maintain the explosions."
