389,909. Oil engines. VANNI, P. G., 11, Via Rugabella, Milan, Italy. Nov. 18, 1931, No. 32026. Convention date, Nov. 22, 1930. [Class 7 (iii).] In an engine in which the air is admitted to the cylinder with a whirling motion, part of the air is diverted into a small pocket which is located in the side wall of the cylinder and into which liquid fuel is injected. As shown in Fig. 2, a projecting lip 31 directs part of the whirling air into a pocket 30 into which fuel is injected by a nozzle 28. According to the construction shown in Fig. 4, a byepass 32 conveys air from the cylinder 11 to a pocket 30a. In further modifications, (1) two byepasses are provided, (2) a byepass and a pocket are located in a ring disposed in the cylinder and grooves cut in the cylinder wall lead to a pocket. The whirling of the air may be produced as described in Specification 371,533, by using inclined inlet ports, screened inlet valves, or sleeves with inclined ports.
