Abstract

535,065. Cylinders. BRISTOL TRAMWAYS & CARRIAGE CO., Ltd., and BUSWELL, F. J. Sept. 21, 1939, No. 26376. [Class 7 (ii)] In an engine having an inlet passage 17 opening into the cylinder through an inlet port part of the wall of the passage changes direction near the port to provide a lip 21 extending substantially parallel to the plane of the port, while the opposite part 19 changes direction in the opposite sense so as to extend at right angles or at a large angle to the lip, so that different parts of the stream of gases enter at different angles. The passage 17 may be formed with an intermediate constriction. As shown, the passage 17 is formed in a sleeve 12 and the lip 21 and part 19 in the cylinder head. In modifications (a) the sleeve 12 is extended to the inlet port and provided with the lip 21 and port 19 ; (b) the sleeve 12 is omitted and the passage 17, lip &c. are formed in the cylinder head.
