554,134. Two-stroke engines; combustion chambers. DUFOUR, L. Dec. 18, 1941, No. 16323. Convention date, Feb. 17. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] In a two-stroke engine with piston-controlled inlet and exhaust ports 4, 5 and in which the gases entering the cylinder are directed upwards along the cylinder wall, a pocket 7 in the cylinder head 3 is of decreasing radius of curvature from the wall of the cylinder and terminates in a descending wall 8 which is vertical or slightly inclined towards the ascending stream of gases. The wall 8 is at a distance of about one-fifth to one-half the diameter of the cylinder from the wall of the cylinder opposite to the ascending stream of gases. The object is to create eddies which prevent the escape of the fresh gases through the exhaust port. The wall 8 is preferably inclined to the axis of the cylinder at an angle between 5 degrees and 15 degrees, and the port a of the cylinder head is parallel to the corresponding part of the piston, the edge 9 being rounded. Figs. 3 and 5 show arrangements in which two inlet ports 4 are located on either side of an exhaust port 5. The edge 9 of the pocket may be straight in plan or curved as shown in Fig. 6.
