Abstract

A cylinder head for a compression-ignition I.C. engine comprises an inlet duct for delivering air in a swirl-inducing manner into the working space of a cylinder through two valve-controlled ports 2, 3. The duct receives the air through a single port 1 in a lateral face of the cylinder head and delivers the air to the ports 2, 3 through two branches 9, 11. The upstream end of the branch 9 is provided with a segment or crescent-shaped lip 17 and the branch 11 is directed as shown, to cause the air to pass through the ports 2, 3 into the working space in a swirl-inducing manner. The lip 17 is inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis 21 of the associated valve, and the distance from axis 21 to the nearest point of the lip is between 0.25 and 0.45 times the inner diameter of the associated valve seat.
