Abstract
Metal elements of vacuum electric devices such as incandescent lamps and thermionic valves are formed of an alloy containing at least 90 per cent of nickel and at least 0,5 per cent of silicon. The nickel may be replaced wholly or partly by cobalt. Other metals including titanium, vanadium, and zirconium may be added, the silicon forming not more than 6-7 per cent of the alloy and at least 40 per cent of the metals added to the nickel. The alloys withstand high temperatures, are not readily oxidized, are wet by molten glass, are free from occluded gases and withstand the erosive action of electron streams. The ductility and toughness may be improved by the addition of manganese, 5 per cent being sufficient. The thermal and electrical conductivity may be reduced by adding copper, iron, or tungsten. Magnesium may be added to reduce the gas content. Sulphur, carbon, and phosphorus are excluded. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 278,454, 279,890, 295,971, 302,394, 330,401, 334,460, [all in Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.], and 355,083.
