Abstract
Iron or alloys or iron with copper or a noble metal having a carbon content of 8 per cent or over are manufactured by heating the metal to 2800 DEG to 3500 DEG C. in a carbon or graphite crucible in the presence of a non-oxidising atmosphere. The crucible may be a hollow graphite electrode. An initial charge of iron may be melted in the hollow electrode by the passage of an electric current and in an atmosphere of an inert gas such as nitrogen and copper added to the melt to form an alloy consisting of 58 per cent Fe, 12 per cent C and 30 per cent Cu.
