Abstract
Titanium is prepared by producing a mixed crystal of titanium, 5-10 per cent carbon and 7-14 per cent oxygen and heating the mixed crystal to a temperature of at least 2500 DEG C. until the carbon and oxygen form a gaseous compound leaving titanium as metal. The mixed crystal may be heated in a vacuum or in a hydrogen atmosphere at a pressure between 0.1 and 10 atmospheres or under a high voltage electric arc in hydrogen at a pressure over 10 atmospheres. The metal may thereafter be heated in an inert gas atmosphere. Titanium alloys may be formed by heating the mixed crystal with a metal which is to alloy with the titanium, e.g. nickel or cobalt. Thus where the mixed crystal is formed by reaction of titanium dioxide and carbon nickel oxide may be added to the reaction mixture to form nickel by reduction. Rich titanium alloys or titanium may be formed by adding an alloying metal in this manner and heating the titanium alloy formed to vaporize at least part of the alloying metal. Nitrogen binding metals such as lithium or magnesium may be added to the mixed crystal.
