Abstract
525,478. Alloys; annealing. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 22, 1939, Nos. 5838 and 5839. Convention dates. Feb. 23, 1938, and Sept. 10, 1938. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] Malleable iron castings are made from iron containing graphitizing agents equivalent in effect to 1.3 per cent. or more of silicon, particularly 1.3 - 2.25 per cent., and a small amount of tellurium, which may be 0.0001 - 0.2 per cent. with or without 0.25 - 2' per cent. of copper and 0.1 - 0.75 per cent. of molybdenum. The carbon content may be 2 - 3.5 per cent. The tellurium may be added as such, or as oxide or other compound, or as an alloy. The annealing operation may comprise heating to 900‹F. for 4 hours followed by heating to 1700‹F.; or heating to 1700‹F. for about 8 hours, cooling to 1400‹F. at the rate of about 150‹F. per hour and then to 1300‹F. at 7‹F per hour. Hardness may be increased by quenching in oil or air from about 1700‹F.
