Abstract

533,873. Alloys; annealing. THORNTON. A. A. (Sheffield Steel Corporation). Dec. 7, 1939, No. 31705. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] Grinding elements for ball mills are made from steel containing 0.6- 1.1 per cent. of carbon, 0.3 - 1.1 per cent. of manganese, 0.1 - 0.8 per cent, of molybdenum, and up to 0.3 per cent. of aluminium or silicon, with or without 0.2 - 0.3 per cent. of copper. The heat-treatment may comprise quenching in brine, water, or oil from about 1450‹F. followed in some cases by heating at 400 or 500‹F. for half an hour and slowly cooling, the heat-treatment and composition being so related that the element has a fine grain hardened structure throughout or a fine grain hardened outer part surrounding a hardened core of coarser grain.
