373,478. Butterfly valves. USHIO, Y., 1016, Oaza Kanamachi, Kanamachi, Minami Katsushika-Gori, Tokio. July 22, 1931, No. 20996. Convention date, July 30, 1930. [Class 135.] A butterfly hinged valve of the kind withdrawn from its seating and then rotated is provided with means, preferably a balancing or byepass valve 21 and passage 19, for putting the valve chamber into communication with the low pressure side before opening the valve. The first action of rotation of the wheel 15 raises the slidable member 20 on the screwed spindle 3 and with it the by-pass valve 21 to the open position until it abuts against a stop 24 ; further rotation of the wheel 15 thereupon depresses the spindle 3 thereby causing inclined parts 4 thereon, operating in inclined grooves 11 in the valve member 7, to withdraw the latter from its seating 8. Subsequently the valve is turned to a position substantially parallel with the flow by manipulation of a wheel 16 operating worm gearing 18. The dual operating wheels can be replaced by single wheel manipulation by the provision on the spindle of a block provided with a groove partly vertical and then helical engaging a fixed pin in the casing whereby the withdrawal and balancing, and subsequent rotation to the open position take place in succession.
