Convention date, June 23, 1930. [Class 23.] Apparatus for grading solid. pulverulent material carried in suspension in a current of air or gas consists of a central pipe 4 by which the gas carrying the solid is delivered against a plate 7 by which it is deflected laterally through oblique vanes 6 producing in the gas a whirling motion and causing the deposition of the heavier particles while the lighter particles are carried away in the current. The apparatus described provides two stages of separation and comprises intermediate and outer casing 11, 1 and two sets of vanes 6, 13. The rings of vanes have a sliding fit on the pipe 4 and casings 11 respectively and are adjustable vertically by rods 9, 16 to vary the size of the passages between the vanes. The plate 7 is provided with an annular lip 8 forming with the casing 11 an annular passage for the gas current. A conical surface 10 on the plate 7 prevents the accumulation of deposits thereon, and the conical covers 15, 2 of the intermediate and outer casings provide a passage of decreasing cross section leading to the exhaust pipe 3.
