Abstract

1,272,989. Separating binary mixtures of gases. KERNFORSCHUNG m.b.H. GES FUR. 5 Sept., 1969 [30 Sept., 1968], No. 44069/69. Heading B1L. Binary gas or vapour mixtures, especially mixtures of isotopes are separated kinetically in a tubular separator having the general configuration shown in Fig. 1, chambers 13, 15 being feed pipes for the mixture to be separated and chambers 12, 14, 114 being discharge pipes for separated heavy fraction. Chambers 13, 15 are closed at one end of the apparatus and chambers 12, 14, 114 at the other end. Gas mixture passing under pressure along chambers 13, 15 passes radially outwards through aperture 17 and is directed by lips 18 towards orifice 19, stripping screen 110 and passage 111, various constructions of these integers being illustrated in Figs. 2-6 (not shown). The lighter fraction passes radially outward through orifice 19, while the heavier fraction passes through passages 111, 112 into chambers 12, 14 and thence also through aperture 115 into central chamber 114. In Fig. 7 is illustrated a unit, mounted vertically, which is suitable for operation in a cascade arrangement (see Fig. 8, not shown), the operation ratio into lighter and heavier fractions being adjustable therein by means of the adjustable regulating valve 719 situated in the throat of the central chamber 100 through which pass both heavy fraction from a later stage introduced through pipe 716, and heavier fraction collecting in the central chamber 100 from separation within the stage.
