Abstract

429,028. Centrifugal dust separators. CHELTNAM, C. H. W., and CHELTNAM, C. H., 188, Adelaide Road, Brockley, London. Nov. 20, 1933, No. 32287. [Class 23] A separator of the cyclone type has means for modifying the direction or velocity of the gas in the dust eduction pipe so as to modify the size of the dust particles precipitated therein. A separator 1, of the type described in Specification 406,036, is shown in Fig. 1 with an exhauster 4 connected to the clean gas outlet 3. The dust eduction pipe 5 is connected to a hopper or dust container 6, the ingress and egress of the dust being controlled by slide valves 7, 8. A small bore pipe 9 allows gas to be withdrawn from the pipe 5 or to be added from an outside source. Where gas is to be withdrawn the inner end of pipe 9 terminates in a funnel 10, and it may terminate in a small dome on the top of the dust container. Where gas is to be added the pipe 9 conveys it to a chamber 12 round the pipe 5 from which it passes into the pipe 5 through slots 13. Two separators may be connected in series and gas may be added in the eduction pipe of the first while gas is withdrawn from the eduction pipe of the second. The valves controlling the entry and discharge of each dust container may be of the form shown in Fig. 9. The plate 24 has a circular port and slides between two castings 25, 26 which are provided with packing rings 27 to establish air-tight joints. The castings are held together by springs but can be forced apart by cams 33, 34 operated by a hand lever 36. In a modification, blade springs are used to ease the seatings off the slide while cams are used to provide the clamping pressure. A linkage 50 is employed in the form shown in Fig. 1 to ensure that the entry and discharge valves 7, 8 shall not both be open at the same time.
