Abstract
Relates to nitrogenized beryllium steels which may contain nickel or chromium or both. The steel after chilling from a high temperature is nitrogenized and may be hardened by heating to 400-600 DEG C. In an example steels containing 1 per cent of beryllium and 7 per cent of nickel, or 1 per cent of beryllium, 5 per cent of nickel and 12 per cent of chromium, were chilled from 950 DEG C. and heated for three days in a stream of ammonia at 520 DEG C. Steels containing 4 per cent of beryllium only and 1 per cent of beryllium and 12 per cent of manganese are referred to.
