Abstract
Iron or steel alloys containing (1) 10-15 per cent of manganese, up to 5 per cent of nickel and, for example, less than 1 per cent of carbon, or (2) 0,3-0,85 per cent of carbon, up to 5 per cent of nickel, 10-15 per cent of manganese, and up to 8 per cent of chromium, are employed in cold working processes, and a heat treatment is applied to the complete article as well as to the partly formed article, if need be, at one or more earlier stages of manufacture. In an example the blank is annealed at 1400-1800 DEG F., cooled in air or water and subjected to cold shaping. After part or finish forming, the article is heated to about 1300 DEG F. which is held for a period, e.g. 5-15 minutes, and the article cooled in air. Further cold shaping is followed by heating to about 1200 DEG F. Specification 336,091, [Class 72, Iron &c.], is referred to.
