Abstract
Steels, alloy, steels, and alloys containing nickel are treated by imparting a bright surface to them, rendering the bright surface passive and then annealing at 1650-2000 DEG F. for several hours in a reducing atmosphere, e.g. dry hydrogen. The alloys may be washed before annealing. The surface of the steel is rendered passive by heating them in a nitric acid solution at 160-200 DEG F. for 15-60 minutes. The process may be applied to a stainless steel containing 18 per cent of chromium and 14 of nickel or to a nickel-chromium alloy containing 88 per cent of nickel.
